Ski touring: Itinerary to the Cabane de Brunet, Valais
Article updated on 24.12.24
If you’re looking for an accessible ski touring outing in Valais, with breathtaking scenery and a welcoming hut as a reward, the ascent to Cabane de Brunet is a perfect option. Here’s everything you need to know to organise this winter adventure in Switzerland.
How to get there ?
The start of this hike is about 40 minutes’ drive from Martigny. The access road is well maintained, but in winter it is essential to be equipped with snow tyres and chains to ensure your safety.
Parking available (still free for the time being in December 2024):
- GPS coordinate : [46.04186, 7.27603]
Dogfriendly : You can bring your dog with you, but make sure you respect the local wildlife and keep your companion under control.
The Tour
This itinerary is ideal for an introductory outing or your first outing of the season. Although technically relatively easy, its length requires a good level of fitness.
Main information :
- Distance uphill : 5 km
- Positive ascent : +800 m
- Estimated time : around 2h30 for the ascent
- Descent : Return via the prepared road, perfect for those who are not too comfortable with off-piste skiing.
There are no conversions on this route, making it accessible to beginner ski tourers. However, it can be a little long for a first outing: you have the option of turning back earlier if necessary.
Experienced skiers can continue up to Mont Rogneux for an extra challenge and even more spectacular views. But don’t go there if you don’t have the level! Personally, we know from experience that it’s not for us at the moment.
Practical information :
- From the parking lot : Head toward the dry toilets (handy for preparing before the climb) and descend slightly to reach the start of the trail at the bend.
- Start on the groomed road : This first section is easy and provides a gradual warm-up.
- Key junction : After around 800 metres, take the path that climbs to the left (GPS coordinates: 46.04289, 7.26553). This trail is much more pleasant and means you don’t have to take the road up alone. If you miss it, your walk will be unnecessarily long.
Some recommendations
- Best period : Throughout the winter season (December to March), the snow is abundant and well preserved thanks to the area’s low level of sunshine.
- Precaution : If it hasn’t snowed for several weeks, we advise you to take your knives with you on skis, as the snow freezes quickly due to the low levels of sunshine.
- Snacks and drinks : Prepare yourself with enough water and snacks to keep you energised throughout the climb as it is relatively long for beginners.
- Cabane de Brunet : At the top, enjoy a moment’s rest in this hut where you can eat and drink a good cup of tea or beer. You can even stay overnight to extend the experience.
