Located in the south of Chile, the island of Chiloé is a real treasure trove for travellers in search of picturesque landscapes, authentic culture and unique experiences. Here are the 6 must-sees for a successful visit to this enchanting island.
1. Quemchi and Aucar Island
Quemchi, nicknamed ‘the magic town’, is a charming coastal village. One of its jewels is the wooden bridge leading to Aucar Island, also known as the Island of the Sailors’ Souls.
- Main activity : Cross the long wooden footbridge over the calm waters. The island is a place of serenity, perfect for admiring the local flora and the small cemetery nestling in a forest.
- Local tip : Try to go at sunset for even more spectacular views. And if you have time, go once at high tide and again at low tide.
2. Castro and its colourful houses on stilts
The capital of Chiloé, Castro, is famous for its “palafitos“, brightly painted houses on stilts that line the coast.
- Main activity : Take a stroll along the seafront to admire these typical houses, particularly in the Gamboa and Pedro Montt districts.
- À ne pas manquer : You can also visit San Francisco Cathedral, a wooden masterpiece listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
3. The beautiful Muelle del Tiempo hike
Located near Cucao, this unique site is famous for its circular wooden footbridge.
- Hike : If you don’t have a 4×4 vehicle, park before the sign and walk 500 metres to the entrance. The 8km round trip hike (+170m ascent) offers an immersive experience in nature.
- Entrance fee : Approximately USD 5 pp
- Tip : Leave early to avoid the crowds and enjoy the tranquillity of the area.
4. Enjoy local oysters
Chiloé is renowned for its fresh seafood, and oysters in particular are a delicacy not to be missed.
Where to try them: Several restaurants in Castro and Ancud offer freshly-caught oysters. Or you can go and taste them directly at the fishermen’s. For example, we went here -41.8952, -73.515 just after the ferry.
5. Penguin watching in Punihuil by kayak
Punihuil Bay, in the north-west of the island, is famous for its colonies of Humboldt and Magellanic penguins, a cohabitation that is unique in the world.
- Activity : Rent a kayak for an ecological experience and get up close to these adorable birds in their natural habitat. Guided boat trips are also available.
- Best time to visit : Penguins are generally on site from September to March.
- Tip : Dress warmly and wear a life jacket for a safe and comfortable outing.
6. The island's typical wooden churches
Chiloé is home to more than 150 wooden churches, 16 of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They reflect a unique blend of European architecture and indigenous techniques.

- Transport: A car or van is ideal for getting around the island easily.
