Bern: 2-Day E-Bike itinerary in the Emmental

Bern: 2-Day E-Bike itinerary in the Emmental

Article updated on 25.06.26

The Emmental is often associated with its world-famous cheese. Yet this beautiful region of the Canton of Bern is also the perfect destination for an e-bike weekend. Quiet country roads, rolling hills, and plenty of great food stops make it an ideal place to explore by bike.

With more than 600 km of signposted cycling routes, it’s easy to build an itinerary that suits your fitness level and the time you have available.

Over two days, we followed two official cycling routes starting from Langnau, passing traditional farmhouses, charming village cafés, local restaurants, and beautiful viewpoints over the Emmental hills. Here’s the itinerary we tested.

Getting there by public transport

One of the biggest advantages of this getaway is how easy it is to reach by train.

From Martigny, it took us around 2 hours and 20 minutes to reach Langnau, with only two changes, in Visp and Bern. In the end, that’s only about thirty minutes longer than driving (around 1 hour and 50 minutes without traffic), but the journey is much more relaxing. There’s no need to worry about parking—simply hop on the train and pick up your e-bike directly at the bike rental shop next to Langnau train station : 46.9381, 7.7860.

Day 1: Langnau → Sumiswald → Löchlibad

🚴 Route 699 – Herzschlaufe Gotthelf
⛰️ 39 km | +1,070 m | -830 m
🍽️ Bären in Sumiswald
☕ Verschnuufer-Pintli & Café Gotthelf Zentrum Lützelflüh
🛏️ Hotel Löchlibad

The first day takes you through the heart of the Emmental, winding through peaceful valleys, rolling hills, and traditional farmhouses that define the region. The roads are quiet and constantly alternate between gentle climbs, fun descents, and beautiful countryside views.

The route is very well signposted throughout. Even so, we recommend downloading the GPX track before setting off.

First stop: Verschnuufer-Pintli

Just a few kilometres after leaving Langnau, we stopped at Verschnuufer-Pintli, a charming self-service café set inside a small wooden cottage by the roadside.

Inside, you’ll find coffee, cold drinks, ice cream, and homemade treats available on a self-service basis. Simply help yourself and pay afterwards using TWINT or cash, a trust-based system that is surprisingly common throughout the region.

The real owner of the place, however, seems to be the resident cat, who happily kept us company throughout our coffee break.

A perfect way to start the day.

Lunch at Landgasthof Bären

Around lunchtime, we stopped at Landgasthof Bären in Sumiswald.

The restaurant serves generous regional dishes prepared with local ingredients. It’s also a convenient place to recharge… not only yourself, but your e-bike too.

Free charging stations for e-bikes are available while you enjoy your meal.

Coffee break at Gotthelf Zentrum

In the afternoon, we continued to Café Gotthelf Zentrum in Lützelflüh.

It’s a lovely little spot to enjoy a coffee and a homemade dessert before cycling the final kilometres of the day.

Overnight at Hotel Löchlibad

Without a doubt, the highlight of our first day was our stay at Löchlibad.

From the moment we arrived, Vanessa and Christoph made us feel incredibly welcome. You quickly feel at home here. The hotel has preserved all the charm of a traditional Emmental farmhouse while offering a warm and authentic atmosphere.

With only two double rooms, it’s the perfect place to enjoy some peace and quiet, far from the crowds.

In the evening, Vanessa prepares delicious homemade dishes using local, seasonal ingredients, while Christoph welcomes guests with a smile. To finish the meal, you can even sample their own fruit brandies, distilled just a few kilometres away using local fruit.

One thing to keep in mind: the restaurant is only open for dinner, and both the hotel and restaurant are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so it’s worth planning your itinerary accordingly.

Day 2: Löchlibad → Langnau → Kambly

🚴 Routes 699 & 777 – Kambly Experience Tour
⛰️ 50 km | +1,320 m | -1,570 m
🍽️ Restaurant Blapbach
☕ Bel Etage & Kambly Factory

The second day begins by cycling back towards Langnau to complete Route 699. Once back in town, we continue straight onto Route 777, also known as the Kambly Experience Tour.

This second day is a little more challenging than the first, with more elevation gain. Fortunately, thanks to the e-bikes, the climbs feel surprisingly easy, allowing you to fully enjoy the scenery without too much effort.

Coffee break at Bel Etage

Our first stop of the day is Bel Etage.

This charming self-service café is located next to a beautiful historic house. It’s the perfect place to stop for a coffee, enjoy an ice cream, or simply relax on the terrace and its deck chairs before getting back on the bike.

Payment is easy with TWINT or cash.

Lunch with a view at Blapbach

After several climbs, a lunch break at Restaurant Blapbach is more than deserved.

Perched high above the Emmental hills, the restaurant offers beautiful views over the rolling countryside and, on clear days, all the way to the Bernese Alps. It’s a wonderful place to recharge before tackling the final part of the route.

Unfortunately, the restaurant is scheduled to close permanently at the end of 2026.

Visit to the Kambly Factory

No weekend in the Emmental would be complete without a stop at Kambly.

The factory shop offers free tastings of almost the entire range of Kambly biscuits. Needless to say, it’s best not to arrive on an empty stomach… It’s the kind of place where you’ll want to try everything.

It’s also the perfect opportunity to bring home a few delicious souvenirs from the Emmental or simply enjoy a coffee at the Kambly Café before cycling the final kilometres back to Langnau.

After this last stop, only a few kilometres remain before returning the bikes and catching the train home.

A perfect weekend to discover the Emmental differently

In just two days, this itinerary reveals a region that is often known only for its famous cheese, even though it has so much more to offer.

Quiet country roads, traditional farmhouses, delicious local food, panoramic viewpoints and warm hospitality make the Emmental an ideal destination for an e-bike weekend.

The electric assistance takes the effort out of the many climbs, leaving you free to enjoy the landscapes at your own pace. It’s a wonderful way to slow down and experience this beautiful region surrounded by nature.
