Article updated on 06.11.25

Often overlooked, Luxembourg is a real gem for nature and hiking lovers. Between dense forests, medieval castles, and peaceful villages, this small country is easy to explore thanks to its short distances and free public transport.

This 3-day itinerary combines outdoor activities, cultural discoveries, and charming accommodation. Each hike can be adjusted depending on your preferences, whether you want a shorter walk or a longer challenge.

Day 1: The Mullerthal Trail – Route 2

🥾 15 km | +670 m / -650 m
⏱️ Around 5 hours
📍 Berdorf – Mullerthal – Altrier
🛏️ Berdorfer Eck, Berdorf

The first day takes you through the Mullerthal, also known as Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland. This emblematic region is famous for its spectacular rock formations, narrow gorges, and mysterious forests.

Starting from Berdorf, Route 2 of the Mullerthal Trail alternates between cliffs, woods, and narrow passages carved into the rock, leading to the iconic Schiessentümpel waterfall.

For lunch, we recommend stopping at Heringer Millen, a restored old mill by the river that serves local specialties.

Those with extra energy can continue to Altrier, then take the free bus 211 from the “Beim Bildchen” stop back to Berdorf.

Our favorite spots along the trail:

📍 Ruetschësch footbridge (49.82446, 6.34091)

📍 Raiberhiehl (49.82492, 6.33828)

📍 Priedegtstull (49.81716, 6.33233)

📍 Sight Seeing Rock (49.78689, 6.30896)

📍 Schiessentümpel waterfall (49.78515, 6.29933)

Day 2: Castles and Viewpoints in Northern Luxembourg

🏰 Beaufort and Bourscheid Castles
🥾 Kaundorf Trail hike to the Runtschelt viewpoint
🛏️ Cocoon Hotel Belair, Bourscheid

The day begins in Beaufort, just a 15-minute drive away. Here, two castles stand side by side, one medieval, the other Renaissance. Several trails start from the castle grounds, but we recommend the B4 Trail, a 6 km loop offering beautiful views over the valley.

Our favorite spots :

📍 Castle view from the lake (49.83167, 6.28859)

📍 Wooden walkway (49.83540, 6.28650)

In the afternoon, head north to the Éislek region for a hike on the Kaundorf Trail up to the Runtschelt viewpoint. This scenic lookout overlooks the Upper Sûre Lake, a peaceful area surrounded by forest. The viewpoint is accessible in less than 10 minutes, or you can opt for the full 8 km loop for a longer hike.

At the end of the day, make your way to Bourscheid. Perched 150 meters above the Sûre River, Bourscheid Castle is the largest in the country. At night, its lighting creates a magical atmosphere.

Stay at the Cocoon Hotel Belair, located right by the river, with direct views of the illuminated castle.

Day 3: The Lee Trail – Hike from Hoscheid to Bourscheid

🥾 19 km | +840 m / -1090 m
⏱️ Around 6 hours
📍 Hoscheid → Bourscheid
🛏️ Cocoon Hotel Belair, Bourscheid

For the final day, set out on the Lee Trail, one of Luxembourg’s most beautiful hiking routes. The section from Hoscheid to Bourscheid covers 19 km with around 800 meters of elevation gain.

To avoid waiting for buses at the end of the day, we recommend taking the free buses in the morning to Hoscheid, then hiking back to Bourscheid.
Take bus 136 from “Bourscheid op der Millen” to Ettelbruck bus station, then bus 137 to “Hoscheid Kräizgaass.”

With the Mobiliteit.lu app, you can plan and track public transport routes online and in real time.

Back at the Cocoon Hotel Belair, enjoy a relaxing moment on the riverside terrace with a stunning view of the illuminated castle, the perfect way to end your trip.

Our favorite spots along the trail:

📍 Molberlee ridge (49.94809, 6.06547)

📍 “Doigt de Dieu” viewpoint (49.92072, 6.04083)

📍 View of Bourscheid Castle (49.91493, 6.07424)

In just three days, this itinerary reveals the natural and cultural diversity of Luxembourg, from the rock formations of the Mullerthal to the panoramic views of the Éislek and the perched castles of Beaufort and Bourscheid.

Easy to access, well-organized, and filled with beautiful stops along the way, this trip is a true outdoor destination in itself, perfect for a long weekend combining nature, heritage, and relaxation.

With free public transport, quality accommodation, and a wealth of hiking trails, Luxembourg can be discovered at your own pace, among lakes, forests, and valleys.
A beautiful surprise right in the heart of Europe.
