Article updated on 14.06.25

Looking for a hike with incredible views of Léman Lake, a real sunset spot and a good physical challenge? Le Grammont ticks all the boxes. It’s one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Valais, with a steep climb that’s well worth the effort. We’ve got all the practical information and advice you need to make the most of it.

How do I get there ?

Departure is from the Flon car park, located just above the village of Miex, in the commune of Vouvry (Valais).

Parking available (CHF1/hour from 8am to 6pm):

Please note that there are only 90 spaces available. A sign at the start of the Route de Miex indicates the number of spaces available, so you don’t have to drive all the way to the car park to find no space.

Please note that the area is protected, which means that it is forbidden to camp in the wild on the entire site (including the car parks and surrounding mountains).

The hike to Grammont

The route starts with a fairly steep climb to Lac de Taney, a little gem nestling at the foot of the mountains. It takes between 40 minutes and 1h30 to reach the lake, where the first stop is ideal for admiring the view and grabbing a snack.

Then the climb to the summit continues. The path climbs through forests and then arrives in front of the Jumelles. Ibex may be spotted here.

  • Distance: 12.8 km round trip
  • Elevation gain: approx. 1100 m ascent
  • Duration: 4 to 7h (depending on pace)
  • Difficulty: easy but good physical condition
  • Recommended time: between June and October (excluding snow)

The Grammont for a sunset?

Grammont (2,172 m) offers an absolutely breathtaking 360° view of Léman Lake, and behind the Dents du Midi.

Coming to the summit for sunset is just crazy: the golden light on the waters of the lake is magical.

For your information, in mid-June we started climbing at around 6pm and reached the summit at around 8.30pm, arriving just in time for Golden Hours.

If you’re doing the sunset at the top of Grammont, don’t forget that you’ll be descending for around 2 hours at night, so don’t forget a good headlamp!

Best time to hike to Grammont

To make the most of this hike, here’s some advice on the best time to go:

  • Late May/early June: This is the ideal time to go hiking, as there aren’t too many people on the trails and it’s not too hot.
  • Late September / early October: just before the snow and with the magnificent autumn colours.
  • Departure outside rush hour: Start before 9am or after 4pm to avoid the crowds, as this is a very popular hike.

What to take with you ?

Here’s what we recommend you take with you on this hike (+ sunset option) :

  • Binoculars: For observing ibex and birds.
  • Hiking poles: Very useful for the steep ascent and descent.
  • Sun cream: Never forget that the sun beats down hard in the mountains!
  • Windproof jacket: at the top, the wind can quickly remind you that you’re at 2,000 m!
  • Second T-shirt: hiking means sweating, so a dry top will keep you warm at the top.
  • 1 to 2 litres of water per person: the climb is long and strenuous and the fountains are indicated as undrinkable.
  • Snacks or energy bars: to keep you going during the climb.
  • Hiking shoes: with a good grip, city trainers are a no go 😅.

Sunset option :

  • Headlamp: essential for a safe descent after sunset.
  • Down jacket: when the sun goes down, temperatures plummet.
  • Hat and gloves: even in summer, it can get pretty chilly up there.
  • Thermos flask with tea: a real treat at the top, especially when it starts to get chilly.

The Grammont isn’t a technical hike, but it does have a 1,100 m ascent, so it’s best to be in reasonable physical condition. If you’re prepared to work up a sweat, the reward is at the top: one of the best 360° views in the area, with  Léman Lake in the foreground and the peaks all around.

It really is the perfect spot for a sunrise or sunset, especially if you want to avoid the crowds and take advantage of the best light. A sure bet for the motivated.
