Switzerland: 3-Day Train Itinerary Between Andermatt and the Goms Valley
Article updated on 17.02.26
What if winter in Switzerland could be experienced without a car?
The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn runs through some of the most beautiful regions in Switzerland, connecting Zermatt, Andermatt, and the Goms Valley across 144 kilometres of spectacular scenery.
In just a few days, you can combine alpine skiing and cross-country skiing, all while travelling exclusively by train. Simple, practical, and above all enjoyable: no parking stress, no snowy roads to deal with, just the pleasure of the journey and the mountains.
Here’s the 3-day itinerary we tested.
Day 1 & 2: Alpine Skiing in Andermatt
🚞 Access: Visp → Andermatt by train (1 train per hour)
⛷️ Ski area: Andermatt–Sedrun–Disentis (180 km of slopes)
🛏️ Overnight: Radisson Blu, Andermatt
From Visp, the train climbs gently up to Andermatt. The journey takes just over two hours and already offers stunning views along the way.
The lower station of the Gütsch Express is directly accessible from the train station via an underground passage, no shuttle or car needed.
The Andermatt–Sedrun–Disentis ski area is the largest in Central Switzerland, with 180 km of slopes linking Andermatt to Disentis.
Practical info:
The ski pass is cheaper if purchased online the day before, and it also includes access to the MGB train to travel between resorts, super convenient!
Our favourite run?
The descent from Schneehüenerstock down to Oberalp Pass. It’s long, with a beautiful gradient and incredible views the entire way down.

Day 3: Cross-Country Skiing in the Goms Valley
🚞 Access: Andermatt → Münster by train
🎿 Over 100 km of trails between Oberwald and Niederwald
🛏️ Overnight: Landhaus, Münster
The next day, head to the Goms Valley once again aboard the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn. The journey takes about 45 minutes from Andermatt (and 1 hour from Visp).
The valley is famous for its perfectly prepared cross-country ski trails, both for classic and skating techniques. All villages are connected by train, making it easy to start in one place and return from another.
Practical info:
- For beginners, we were advised to try the blue trail between Geschinen and Ulrichen. It’s relatively flat and ideal for learning the technique.
- The train is included in the cross-country ski pass between Fiesch and Oberwald, which makes planning very simple.
- Equipment rental: Elmars Gadä in Geschinen
The Matterhorn Gotthard Pass
If you’re planning several journeys in the region, the Matterhorn Gotthard Pass can be a great option.
It allows unlimited travel for 2, 3, or 5 days (to be used within one month) across the entire Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn network, as well as selected BLS, SBB, and PostBus routes in Upper Valais.
In addition to train and bus travel, the pass also offers:
- 50% discount on many cable cars
- 50% discount on various activities (thermal baths, museums, leisure attractions)
It’s a practical solution if you’re combining skiing, excursions, and travel between regions such as Andermatt, Goms, or even Zermatt.
