Flims/Laax: Outdoor Activities not to miss in 2 days

Article updated on 21.09.25
Looking for an active mountain weekend? Head to Graubünden, and more specifically the Flims/Laax region, a true playground for outdoor lovers. Here, summer means shady forests, turquoise lakes, and breathtaking alpine panoramas. In just a short stay, it’s possible to combine two highlights: an e-bike ride up to the natural Strudeltöpfe pools on Alp Mora, followed by a panoramic hike through the Rheinschlucht, also called the “Swiss Grand Canyon.” Two intense, varied days, perfect for soaking up the freshness and energy of the summer mountains.
Day 1: E-bike to the Strudeltöpfe on Alp Mora
🚴♀️ 15 km one way | +1,410 m / -400 m
⏱️ About 6 hours
📍 Flims – Trin – Alp Mora
🚩 Start in Flims
The first day begins in Flims, where you can rent your e-bike at LAAX Rental. If you’re staying at a local hotel, don’t forget to bring your guest card, it allows you to travel for free on public transport in Flims, Laax, and Falera.
The route starts right from the rental shop towards Trin and gradually climbs on a forest road, regularly opening up views over the Safiental valley and Piz Beverin.
The climb continues through shady forest before reaching Alp Mora. This is where you’ll need to leave your bikes (46.8512, 9.35871) and walk a few minutes to the famous Strudeltöpfe: spectacular glacier potholes carved into the rock, transformed into natural pools of deep blue water. Even in midsummer, the water is icy cold, perfect for a refreshing dip. The surrounding alpine meadows also make a lovely spot for a picnic with a view. Return by the same route.
Variation: It’s also possible to do this route on foot, or to take a bus from Trin to Purcs, reducing the effort to just 3 km and 350 m elevation gain. Private vehicle access to Alp Mora is prohibited in high season.
Good to know:
The loop is suitable for e-bike beginners, as long as you’re comfortable on gravel roads.
There are no food services at altitude: bring your own snacks and drinks.

Day 2: Hiking Through the Rhine Gorge
🥾 9 km | +130 m / -590 m
⏱️ About 2.5 hours
📍 Lake Cauma – Il Spir – Auenwald/Versam
🚩 Start in Flims
🚃 Return by train and bus from Ilanz
On the second day, head to Lake Cauma, which can be reached on foot directly from Flims. Nestled in the heart of the forest, this turquoise lake is an ideal starting point for a short hike, even with children. From its shores, an easy path leads to the Il Spir panoramic platform, offering a spectacular view over the Rheinschlucht, nicknamed the “Swiss Grand Canyon.”

The trail then gently descends to the bottom of the gorge, where the atmosphere becomes wilder, filled with the sound of the Rhine and the coolness of lush vegetation. It’s the perfect spot for a barbecue break: official areas such as Auenwald near Versam are well equipped and stocked with firewood, making it easy to organize.

In the afternoon, the hike continues peacefully along the valley towards Versam or Valendas, before reaching Ilanz by train. From there, a bus easily takes you back to Flims, with transport included in the guest card.

These two days in Flims/Laax strike a perfect balance: the first day is more active, with an e-bike climb up to Alp Mora and a freezing swim in the Strudeltöpfe, while the second is more relaxed, with an easy hike through the Rhine Gorge. A varied program that lets you enjoy both the challenge of altitude and a more chilled day by the river.
